the invention of the automobile it was difficult for people to fail to
obtain adequate exercise. Most people did not have horses and it was
common to walk 5 or 10 miles each day. After all there were few options
to reach a destination besides walking. So as it turns out walking
is the perfect exercise. It is not so important how fast you walk as is
the distance covered. Of course you should consult a doctor and obtain
supervision and instruction before starting. Many people join their
local YMCA where many exercise resources are available.
How do you know how much to exercise? Back in the 1960's Kenneth
Cooper pubished a book called Aerobics. It was a best seller and
described of system of assigning points to various types of exercise
based on distance covered or time spent. Although many new systems have
been developed since
then it is still a good manual to cover the fundamentals.
Here are some basics to keep in mind:
- If you work with a personal trainer be sure to find one that is
certified by the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA)
orthe American Council on Exercise.

- Although walking is the best exercise for many people it is good to
find several different types of exercise and alternate sometimes.
- Exercise at least 3 days per week and take at least one day off.
- Don't overdue it.
- Keep track of your exercise in a dairy or chart.
- Remember that even if you don't change your diet you will likely
lose weight if you obtain sufficient exercise.
